It’s All In The Doing

There are many superstitions that make me smile. Let’s take the triple drain, if you walk over it, it’s bad luck. Is it not just a large manhole? Or the black cat crossing in front of you, I’d question isn’t it just a cat on it’s way somewhere.

However, over the years I’ve had my beliefs in some (that are totally mental). The other day on my way to work, I passed a royal mail depot and I did something that I haven’t done in years, like 30 years. I crossed my fingers (as in for good luck) and then broke the cross using my other hand; yes you read right, Royal Mail vans. Just for the record, I was not alone doing this 30 years ago, however I was last week.

This instantly bought me back to the age of 9 or 10 when I use to dance and compete. One day driving to a competition along the motorway with my parents, we pass a royal mail depot, oh my god I couldn’t believe my “luck” there were small Royal Mail vans, transit Royal Mail vans, Royal Mail trucks, I was in finger uncrossing heaven. Clearly I was going to do really well at that competition and guess what, I did. I remember so clearly I won 8 medals and 2 trophies. Obviously it was because I passed a Royal Mail depot that morning. Nothing to do with the fact that I had two classes a week and practiced most other nights at home.  The point being, a bit of luck is always nice, however it’s the doing that’s the point of difference and what makes things happen.

What are you doing each day towards your goal or goals? If you haven’t done something for a while, after reading this I encourage you to write down 2 things you’re going to do this week towards it, put them into your diary with a time and do it. Trust me, you’ll feel great about it and you’ll be 2 steps closer to allowing your end goal.

Well done in advance

Do YOUR labels define you?

I’m not talking about whether it’s Topshop or Balmain I’m talking about the labels you give yourself, I’m a procrastinator, I’m unorganized, I’m not confident.

Ask yourself this, are you’re self labels allowing you to get away with things?  So “I haven’t done that job on my to do list” and although it doesn’t feel great, but you know what “I’m a procrastinator” so that’s why I didn’t get it done.  Stop letting yourself of the hook, you’re doing yourself no favours and you will continue in the same cycle.

If you are going to label yourself, start now today by saying the opposite, so for example replace procrastinator with “I am proactive” say it over and over again, and keep telling yourself that. Repetition is key even if you feel resistance push through it, you will soon feel the change internally; it will shift your perspective to a proactive approach.

Self-talk is powerful beyond belief; feed yourself something positive, that will nurture you and move your forward not let you off the hook.

Have a great day

Act Like A Child

What I love about kids is that direct innocence, no mincing of words; they have no qualms in saying exactly what they think and asking for exactly what they want.

This results in you knowing exactly where you stand and what they want.  There are no misunderstandings,  no beating around the bush.  How refreshing.

So 2014 act like a child, you may get what you want a lot quicker.

NB:  I am not promoting stamping of feet and/or tantrums, simply clear communication.

It’s ok not to be ok

What’s important is how you handle it and what you do next.

1. Embrace it

Recognise why you are not ok and say it out loud.  A lot of the time it only takes saying something out loud and admitting it to ourselves that is enough to make us take the first step to change the situation.

Go on, look your inner control freak right in the eye and say “I’m not ok” it will just squirm and scuttle away, perplexed. This in turn will leave you feeling refreshingly empowered and free.  Acceptance is a beautiful thing.

2. Ask for help if you need it

Only you will know who or what that help will be.  It could simply be chatting to your best mate about it.  Give yourself permission to ask for help, it’s ok!

3. Recognize what needs to be done to change the situation

We always have control, even if its 1% we can contribute to change a situation, that change can simply be how we deal with it in our heads.  We can choose to say “No I’ve had enough I’m over it” or tackle it head on with an action plan.  Think, what is in my control to change this situation.

4. Begin the change

That first step can sometimes be the hardest so keep focused on how good you’re going to feel once you’ve done it or the relief you will feel.  One step at a time, that’s all it takes.  Starting is the key.

5.  Enjoy!

And congratulate yourself on your new found freedom in whatever situation it may be.

What If It’s Amazing

Whether it’s starting something new, maybe your dream project, a career change, a new relationship or if it comes to saying goodbye to something or someone that isn’t working for us anymore, a lot of the time the ‘What Ifs’ sneak in.

Now, I’m sure you don’t need me to remind you that ‘What Ifs’ can be an absolute pain in the arse, they waste precious time that we cannot recuperate and they delay great results and experiences from happening.

You yourself know when something needs to change, and you know in the long run that change will make you happier.  Yet no matter how happy you know making that change will make you, the ‘What Ifs’ can still sneak in.

What if it doesn’t work out, what if I am meant to be with them, what if my project wont be successful, what if, what if, what if.  Oh look, it’s a year down the line and I’m miserable because I’m still in the same situation and haven’t gone after what I really want or changed what isn’t working for me.

Now what would happen if you turned that ‘What If’ into a ‘What If It’s Amazing’ and you keep on saying that. ‘What If It’s Amazing’, ‘What If It’s Amazing’, ‘What If It’s Amazing’, then ‘It’s going to be Amazing’, It’s going to be Amazing.  Get that positive energy flowing and commit to making it happen.

You know deep down that it’s the right decision, it’s just that F.E.A.R comes in to play, remember what F.E.A.R stands for, False Expectations Appearing Real.  Meaning, we’re worrying about something that hasn’t even happened yet and something that probably won’t happen either.

The other day I was speaking to one of my best friends who in the past has battled with ‘What Ifs’  and she said this to me “I remind myself that this is just my own imagination, so why not imagine the best if I am choosing to imagine at all”.  I love this!

So the next time you have a doubt ask yourself ‘What If It’s Amazing?’
