There are many superstitions that make me smile. Let’s take the triple drain, if you walk over it, it’s bad luck. Is it not just a large manhole? Or the black cat crossing in front of you, I’d question isn’t it just a cat on it’s way somewhere.
However, over the years I’ve had my beliefs in some (that are totally mental). The other day on my way to work, I passed a royal mail depot and I did something that I haven’t done in years, like 30 years. I crossed my fingers (as in for good luck) and then broke the cross using my other hand; yes you read right, Royal Mail vans. Just for the record, I was not alone doing this 30 years ago, however I was last week.
This instantly bought me back to the age of 9 or 10 when I use to dance and compete. One day driving to a competition along the motorway with my parents, we pass a royal mail depot, oh my god I couldn’t believe my “luck” there were small Royal Mail vans, transit Royal Mail vans, Royal Mail trucks, I was in finger uncrossing heaven. Clearly I was going to do really well at that competition and guess what, I did. I remember so clearly I won 8 medals and 2 trophies. Obviously it was because I passed a Royal Mail depot that morning. Nothing to do with the fact that I had two classes a week and practiced most other nights at home. The point being, a bit of luck is always nice, however it’s the doing that’s the point of difference and what makes things happen.
What are you doing each day towards your goal or goals? If you haven’t done something for a while, after reading this I encourage you to write down 2 things you’re going to do this week towards it, put them into your diary with a time and do it. Trust me, you’ll feel great about it and you’ll be 2 steps closer to allowing your end goal.
Well done in advance
If you have a dog, many fellow dog owners will smile as you walk past and more often than not, if they’re having a sniff (the dogs) the owners will chat. If you have a baby and you’re out and about, often a fellow buggy pusher will smile as if to say I’m also a parent, it’s a common ground, you know what the other might be experiencing. The other one is Christmas day, if you’re out walking Christmas day many passers by will say good morning, not on the 19th December or the 28th, on Christmas day.
So if some of us have these tangible things in common, what’s not to say we all have so much more in common. You never know who is going through the same thing as you, working though it, having some good days, some ok days, some utter crap days and some days of I don’t even want to get out of bed. Or maybe they’re having a, I’ve bloody done it day, I’ve reached what I’ve been aiming for and I rock, that kind of day. Maybe by treating people you pass in the street as if it’s 25th December, or they’ve got something that you also have, that you appreciate, you might just make someone feel a bit better. A simple smile will do. And if they don’t smile back, do it to the next person, and the next person, because when you do get that smile back, it’s a really nice feeling and it doesn’t cost a thing.
*If the 25th December doesn’t do it for you, please insert one that does.
I’m not talking about whether it’s Topshop or Balmain I’m talking about the labels you give yourself, I’m a procrastinator, I’m unorganized, I’m not confident.
Ask yourself this, are you’re self labels allowing you to get away with things? So “I haven’t done that job on my to do list” and although it doesn’t feel great, but you know what “I’m a procrastinator” so that’s why I didn’t get it done. Stop letting yourself of the hook, you’re doing yourself no favours and you will continue in the same cycle.
If you are going to label yourself, start now today by saying the opposite, so for example replace procrastinator with “I am proactive” say it over and over again, and keep telling yourself that. Repetition is key even if you feel resistance push through it, you will soon feel the change internally; it will shift your perspective to a proactive approach.
Self-talk is powerful beyond belief; feed yourself something positive, that will nurture you and move your forward not let you off the hook.
Have a great day

Are you so focused on perfecting your goals, that you’re not achieving them?
It’s not quite right, I need to wait for one more piece of equipment or one more meeting or I need to do one more course. Do you really, really need to?
Ask yourself, what would happen if I don’t wait for one more thing and I just do it anyway.
A little less self-talk, a little more action please
Have you ever been so focused on helping someone else or so focused on work that you’ve lost yourself and not even realised, I’m going to go as far as saying maybe you’ve even put your life on hold. Then one day that person is where they’ve been working towards or the next project at work comes along and suddenly, BANG the self-realisation of ‘what the hell have I been doing for me’ kicks in and the answer is, nothing, I’ve done nothing for myself. Spending your energy on someone or on work, it’s an easy thing to do.
It’s easy to fall into bad sleep patterns, eat unhealthy, remove yourself from any form of exercise, it’s almost self sabotage, ‘it’s not about me it’s about them or it’s about work, ‘must do a great job’. Well actually if you continue you that way, you won’t be any good to yourself, them or work.
So it’s time to put yourself first, you may ask yourself ‘is this ok”, ‘can I do this’, they’re completely natural questions and the answer to both of them is ‘yes it is ok’ and ‘yes you can do it’.
So in the words of Janet Jackson, ask yourself ‘What have you done for me lately?” and if the answer is not much, allow yourself a fresh start by giving yourself some new found self-love and self-respect, believe me, you deserve it.
We can often put things on hold because of someone else, unknown to ourselves we can get tangled up in a web of ‘well if they change things would be better’, ‘I’d do more’, you know the stuff you’ve really been wanting to do for ages, it’s them that holds you back, damn them when are they going to change. I’ve come to tell you, they may never change, it’s not about them changing, it’s about you taking control. It’s about you taking control and creating that change that needs to happen. If you’re waiting for someone to change, it may never happen because they may be perfectly content or even far too lazy to do anything about it. Don’t put things on hold anymore, take control of your life and make things happen.
Your life is up to you.
